What Is Image Resolution?

Image resolution is defined by three primary metrics:

• Pixels: The individual colored dots that make up a digital image (e.g. 7200x10800 pixels).
• PPI (Pixels Per Inch): The density of pixels displayed on a digital screen.
• DPI (Dots Per Inch): The density of ink dots printed on physical paper.

Standard web images are exported at 72 DPI to keep file sizes small. However, if printed, a 72 DPI image looks blurry and pixelated because there are not enough dots per inch to form sharp lines.

To ensure print quality, design files must be exported at 300 DPI. For large posters, this requires a large pixel grid, which can slow down your design tools.
